What is Bikram Yoga?

Bikram Yoga sequence is a form of Hatha Yoga.  The practice of Bikram Yoga consists of 26 postures and two breathing exercises and is performed in a heated room for 90 minutes per class – so expect to sweat a lot!  An accredited Bikram Yoga teacher will guide you through each pose through their dialogue.

Why the heat?

  • Enhances vasodilatation of the blood vessels
  • Allows oxygen in the blood to detach from the hemoglobin more easily
  • Speeds down the breakdown of glucose and fatty acids
  • Metabolism speeds up
  • Makes muscles, fascia and connective tissue more elastic
  • A warmer temperature allows for greater range of motion in the joints
  • Promotes sweating
  • Strengthens immune system
  • Helps burn up to 600 – 1000 calories
  • Making the skin, hair, nails and eyes clearer and more lustrous
  • Strengthens will-power and self-control

What is the first Hot Yoga class like?

Your first class is about having fun, detoxing and beginning to learn how to breathe and practice the therapeutic sequence of 26 yoga postures..  Come back the following day to feel the effects of what this type of yoga can do.  If you have any ailments, recovering from recent injuries or had a recent surgery, please tell the instructor so he/she are aware.  There may be some postures that will be modified for you.  Come to classes hydrated.  You will want to eventually rid the need to drink while in class.  Your yoga is just that…your yoga.  It is not a competition nor is it a race to the finish.  Leave any judgments behind.  Instead use your breath and start to change your mind, body and life.

How quickly shall I progress?

How quickly you progress will depend entirely on you — upon your natural ability to a small extent, but mostly upon the time and effort you give to Yoga.  It will have little to do with how “perfectly” you can do the poses.

How often should I come to class?

Come to class as often as you can.  Ideally, aim for minimum of 3 times per week.  This gives your body a jump start, the maximum benefit.  The harder this yoga is for you initially, the more you need to do it and the more you are going to benefit from it.  Your investment will be returned to you tenfold.

How much water should I drink?

We do not drink enough water for daily living, let alone for exercising in a heated room.  We need 64-80 ounces of water a day to help the body function properly.  Once you are drinking enough water your body will tolerate the heat better and you will actually enjoy the heat.

What if I feel tired after class?

If you feel disoriented or like you need a good nap after your first few classes, this is likely because your body has begun to cleanse itself as a result of the Yoga practice.  After the first few classes this sensation will pass.  Remember: when you step on your yoga mat, you will see exactly where you are today, physically, mentally, emotionally.  Also, if your body is exhausted from everyday activities, naturally your body will want to rest, hence, you might feel tired after class.
